Second grade builds onto the concepts that were presented in first grade.
In reading, the student will continue to master reading fluency and comprehension, with the aid of the Carden vowel chart, comprehension techniques, and oral reading practice.
In language, they will learn about punctuation and creating paragraphs. They will also be able to recognize nouns, adjectives and verbs. They will use this knowledge to write their first book report.
In math, students will master addition and subtraction with carrying, times tables through five, basic geometry and fractions, along with learning about time and money. Problem solving will be applied to all facets of math concepts.
In science, we will introduce the scientific method for experiments using the Discovery Book of Science. Our main units are space, weather, states of matter, and birds.
In 2nd grade Art Appreciation, the students study classical paintings and artists, such as Carl Larson and Jean-Simeon Chardin.
