4th Grader Wins Honors!

Our fourth grade class entered the Governor’s Mansion Essay Contest hosted by the Assistance League of Sacramento. The students were given a presentation by their volunteers and were then asked to write an essay with information they had heard from the presentation. All nine of our 4th grade students entered. Eric was the winner. He was invited along with his family and Mrs. Pena to the Governor’s Mansion on 15th and H St. in downtown Sacramento for an awards ceremony. There he was presented with a certificate and a commemorative coin and a picture of himself in front of the mansion. He then enjoyed cake and punch and a special tour of the mansion. Congratulations Eric!

Eric's winning entry:

Governor's Mansion Essay

I am the squirrel that comes by the Governor's Mansion every day. While I look for nuts I look through the windows of the mansion. My name is Eric. I watch everybody while I chew on my nut. I see everything that happens. Let me tell you about some things I see.

Mr. Gallatin built this mansion for his family. Inside there is a hummingbird on the doorknob. What is that smell? The cook is boiling eggs. That sounds good. Wait, I have to tell you more. Helen is playing with her Bertha doll. Her mother is doing a hair picture. Look! Now the cook is using the ice cream scoop. It is big. What is that smell? Oh no! That house is on fire down the street, but they don't have a fire marker. Poor people. That boy is using his button hook to button his shoes.

Helen's bathtub has clawed feet but it has never moved. The milkman is coming and that bottle is glass with a paper cap. The man in the house across the street is using a moustache cup for his beard.

Well, I told as much as I can now. I must go. Goodbye.

4th Grade Biographies Come to Life!

February 2007

Our fourth grade students each read a biography for their most recent book report. After writing a one page report, each child presented the character they studied, in costume, to their classmates. Parents and staff also attended the presentations, encouraging the students to act out their characters even more. Everyone had a great time and each student did a fantastic job with their presentation.

5th Grade Sailing Ship Adventure!

November 2006

Gabrielle:

Our field trip to the Sacramento Port was fun. We got to ride in a boat called the Gas Light. We got to pull the sails. We also got to coil the rope. The captain split us up into groups of three. We went to three stations. The first station was learning about being an officer on the ship. The second station was learning about what they would trade for. The third station was about the life of a sailor. We got to steer the ship. We also learned about the sides of the boat, and what they were called. One of the sailors sang songs to us. She also taught us some sailor songs. We went under the Tower Bridge. We got to learn what kind of bridge it was. It is a center lift draw bridge.

Jayden:

The 5th grade field trip was a BLAST!!! We went on a boat called The Gas Light. I yelled at the top of my lungs, "Heave! Ho! Heave! Ho!" All day, we spent time learning about the "life of a sailor". We raised the sails and so much more! Good times! Good times!

The inside of the ship, was beautiful. It had beds with lots of pillows on them. We saw a block of tea! If you go on this boat, you'll have just as much fun as we did.

Diana:

My first field trip of the fifth grade was going to the Sacramento Port Of Call. We went on a ship called the “Gas Light.” We had lots of fun. We got to steer the ship, sing sailor songs, learn about charts, learn about what the sailors ate, and what the ships were useful for.

My favorite part was steering the boat. I felt like I was free! We had to steer zig-zag up the river because the wind would make sailing really hard. I had a wonderful time there and I hope that you go too!

Kyle:

On our field trip I had lots of fun. My mom went with our class. We went on a schooner. It was called the Gas Light. It had three sails. Its inside was cool because it was nice, and had many things you wouldn't expect inside a ship. In it was a polished table, a few beds with nice pillows, and a kitchen. The crew's names were Bob, J.R., Tailow, and Amber. We learned many new things. We also got to steer the ship for a little while. I had lots of fun!
